What is bodywork?
There are more than 350 types of bodywork developed to restore different malfunctions in the human form. Here at A Touch of Relief we use the following modalities of bodywork:
Myofascial Release, Craniosacral Therapy and Neuromuscular Therapy. Bodywork differs from massage in a sense that it targets “a system” in the human frame from the physical to the spiritual, whereas the typical Swedish Massage treats the body more as one system without targeting one alone.
Here we often use a combination of bodywork and massage to bring about the freedom and improvements in your body that you are looking for. It is not uncommon for us to use two or more modalities on a client. Here are brief descriptions of the modalities that we can provide you with on your journey to balance, restoration and wellbeing.
Myofascial Release: a safe and effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure on the skin to release connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. There are also long stretching motions that help release different areas of the body. This therapy can be done with more than one therapist for a greater affect.
Craniosacral Therapy:
CST is a noninvasive technique using gentle pressure on the head, neck and back to relieve tightness and discomfort in muscle and joints around the bones of the head, sacrum (a triangular bone in the lower back), and spinal column. The intent from the therapist is to gently work these areas to help the flow of spinal fluid in the central nervous system normalize. Thus relieving headaches along with other issues in the worked areas.
Neuromuscular Therapy: Neuromuscular massage therapy is a type of soft tissue or muscle massage that aims to reduce or rid the body of chronic muscle pain or tightness. It is mainly used to fix trigger points, circulation, nerve compression, postural problems and repetitive movement injuries. This technique uses only enough pressure to remain within your level of mild discomfort as the therapist works to clear out restrictions to blood flow within the muscles and reopens the neuromuscular junctions ( the spot where nerve endings meet with the muscle fibers) relieving tension and pain as the blood flow returns.
Swedish Massage: one of the most common types of massages you can get. It is used to energize or relax the body and improve overall health. This modality of massage involves actions like percussion, kneading, vibration, tapping and rolling. Massage oil or lotion is used to protect the skin from friction so the therapist can glide on the skin with the many different actions.
Lymphatic Drainage: a form of gentle massage that encourages the drainage of lymph and lymph nodes and movements lymph fluids around the body. It can help relieve symptoms of lymphedema and fibromyalgia. What does it feel like? I call it butterfly massage- very light on the skin moving towards your heart.
Reflexology: A reflexologist will use their hands to apply pressure to certain areas of your foot based on where you’re having pain and discomfort. It is believed foot massage relaxes your body and to help you feel stress relief and possibly sleep better. Foot massage is also thought to increase your parasympathetic responses of rest and digest by turning off your flight or fight sympathetic responses bringing a state of relaxation and balance.
